Bianca Dumitrascu
Assistant Professor, Department of Statistics
Herbert and Florence Irving Assistant Professor of Cancer Data Research
Columbia University

I am an Assistant Professor of Statistics at Columbia University. I am affiliated with the Irving Institute for Cancer Dynamics , with courtesy appointments in Computer Science, Systems Biology and the Columbia Stem Cell Initiative. My research focuses on interpretable statistical models and machine learning methods for understanding biological dynamics across space, time, and species.
Academic Journey
Before joining Columbia in 2023, I was an Early Career Fellow at the University of Cambridge, and a Member of the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton during its special year on optimization, statistics, and theoretical machine learning. During my fellowship, I also visited Duke University, where I focused on deep learning and statistical modeling, supported in part by SAMSI.
I did my PhD in Quantitative and Computational Biology at Princeton University and received a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from MIT.
Research Interests
- Interpretable machine learning
- Spatial and single-cell genomics
- Bayesian models and active learning
- Mechanistic modeling of development and regeneration
